Craig Mercantile Company
When Burlington Northern Railroad found its way to Craig in 1889, Craig Mercantile Company opened its doors to serve the increased needs of Missouri River Canyon residents. Centrally located on the hub of the river and half way between the hubs of Great Falls and Helena, MT, this historic general store sold everything from groceries to Peter Schuttler Covered Wagons.
Originally, Craig Mercantile resided at Lot 1 Block 1 Craig, Montana (today's Trout Shop Lodge). Now, Craig Mercantile serves the public two blocks away at the main entry to town in The Trout Shop.
YOUR LAST STOP BEFORE THE RIVER
Times have changed since the store's beginnings. Burlington Northern seldom moves its trains through the Missouri River Canyon. Outdoor recreation, given to us by the the Missouri River, drives the local economy.
Craig Mercantile lives on. Instead of selling lumber, hardware and wheat, today custom lunches and cold beverages for outdoor enthusiasts keeps the store busy. Order your lunches on-line, pick them up at Craig Mercantile along with some cold beverages. From fresh deli sandwiches and homemade cookies to sunblock to a cold six pack of beer, you'll find just what you need for your next adventure.
Sample some Starbucks coffee while selecting your flies for the day. Make final arrangements for your vehicle shuttle, pick up your lunch - you're only one step away from the river. Your boat launch or wading spot rests only moments away.
