Trout Spey on the Missouri River

The Missouri's wide walking speed runs make it a perfect option for covering water with a trout spey. Due to the healthy aquatic plant life the insects and food sources are spread across the whole river unlike many freestone streams where fish tend to gather at overhung banks and deep trenches. Once the rivers vegetation from the summer begins to recede all the way until about May when they begin to grow again the river is in great shape to swing a fly.

Why Trout Spey?

We really enjoy Trout Spey because it is a new technique of fishing to learn and the casting involved is a really fun way to fish. For many of us it gives us practice on our 3-5wt trout spey rods and those same casts translate to 6-9wt spey rods that we hope to be able to use for larger andronomous species such as steelhead or Atlantic salmon at some point throughout the year. We also believe it's an extremely effective way to catch trout on the Missouri and when you get a tight line eat by a larger rainbow or brown trout it is pretty awesome.

We have lots of options to get you on the water when you visit Craig. You can fish the famous dry fly section of the Missouri from Holter Dam to Cascade, MT, or take a jet boat above upper Holter which is known as the Land of Giants, or you can even book a trout spey trip and learn something new.
